How can you use SlipStream?

SlipStream can be used as either a product or provided through a hosted service. more details on products and services

  • The hosted version of SlipStream is preferred where an existing web site runs on a shared server or where it is not possible or cost effective to install the SlipStream software
  • The SlipStream product is better suited to existing web sites which run on dedicated servers

SlipStream Product

The SlipStream product can be installed on a wide range of server environments. SlipStream itself runs under a JavaServer Pages environment, however this can co-exist with other web server environments if for example your existing web server uses common scripting environments like PHP or ASP.

SlipStream is written in Java for high portability and efficiency - this means it will run on ANY server hardware or operating system offering the required software environment. To run SlipStream on your own web server you will need

  • JavaServer Pages support as provided by Apache Tomcat, Resin, JBoss, IBM Websphere, BEA Weblogic and similar
  • An SQL database such as MySQL or Oracle - this is used to hold the mobile device capabilities used by SlipStream
  • An installation of the Java SDK

Note that royalty free copies of the Java SDK, Apache Tomcat/ JBOSS and MySQL database can be used so that there is no additional cost in using SlipStream.

SlipStream Hosted Service

Mobile Life can host your mobile pages for you, so that you can enjoy the benefit of SlipStream without having to install SlipStream (or dependent software) on your existing web-site.

We provide a simple browser detection facility which you can easily add to your existing web-site so that mobile users can be detected and automatically transferred to your mobile pages on our hosting service. We already provide facilities for mobile browser redirection for

  • The popular PHP scripting environment normally available with Apache web servers
  • Microsoft ASP running with Microsoft web servers
  • The PERL scripting environment running in a CGI-BIN environment
